There is no repentance without humility, a willing change of heart, and a consistent change in direction. It doesn’t mean you’re going to do it perfectly but it does mean allowing God to perfect you.
Full repentance requires three things: it requires we admit, submit, and commit.
We must admit we are wrong and God is right, admit that He is Lord and we are not, admit His way is life, and ours is death. This takes a humbled heart.
We must submit ourselves to His discretion, to His correction, and His direction. This takes a humbled and willing heart.
We must commit to trust and follow Him, no matter the trials or travails we may face. We must commit to our conviction that God is always good, always faithful, and He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. This takes a humbled, willing, and whole heart.
Therefore, full repentance means being fully surrendered. This is why the gate is narrow and few find it. Many refuse to admit their need for God if they admit He exists at all. Most are unwilling to submit to God’s sovereignty even if they recognize their need. And very few commit themselves completely, laying down their own lives and following Him no matter the storm, no matter the cost.
He wrote in His word that we should repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand, and bear fruits in keeping with repentance, for the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
